Dr. Krystal Flores-Chavez

Dr. Krystal Flores-Chavez, the instructional assistant professor in the School of Public Health at the Texas A&M Higher Education Center (HECM), was selected as a 2024-2025 Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Faculty Development Fellow by the National MCH Workforce Development Center.

The organization announced its cohort of 10 MCH fellows in early 2024.

The fellowship will begin in May 2024 and will assist Dr. Flores-Chavez in developing the first MCH organization for undergraduate Public Health majors and minors at the HECM.

The MCH organization’s efforts will include:

  1. Hosting a speaker series at the HECM to provide a space for students to hear from skilled maternal and child health leaders across the region and state.
  2. Increasing student advocacy skills through the development a Photovoice Exhibit featuring photographs taken by current and former students focused on MCH issues occurring in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV). 
  3. Developing a student-led community service project addressing MCH health disparities in the RGV.

Dr. Flores-Chavez’s mission is to provide networking and community outreach opportunities to increase the number of students pursuing maternal and child health-focused career paths to elevate the public health workforce in the region.
